The Akita is a powerfully built dog that originated in Northern Japan and used an a hunting dog. Because of its strength and size, standing as high as 27 inches at the withers, the dog was even used to hunt bears.
The Akita became very popular with members of the Japanese royal family. For this reason it is still sometimes referred to as the “Royal dog of Japan”.
The dog is an excellent, fierce guard and is used by Police in Japan. With firm handling and early training it can become a suitable family dog.
