An unusual feature of this breed is the fact that it has long hair that grows around the mouth. This gives the impression of a beard and accounts for its name.
This breed that originated in Scotland centuries ago, was originally used to herd cattle and sheep.
Although very intelligent, fearless and good natured, it can be self-willed and sometimes inclined to be somewhat obstinate.
Because of its coat, that is in effect a double coat, a layer of soft hair underneath a stronger outer coat, the breed is adaptable for both cold and warmer climates, being able to withstand both heat and cold.
Colors of the breed vary from gray and white to black and brown. In size the dog is fairly large, standing about 22 inches in height and weighing as much as 60 lbs.
