This toy breed, small as it is, can make a delightful, loyal and devoted pet. Males are no larger than 2 to 3 pounds and are sometimes photographed sitting in a teacup! As the name suggests, the Chihuahua originated in Mexico.
Even though the Chihuahua is so small, it is a surprisingly sturdy little animal and quite fearless. They are very alert and will warn you if an unfamiliar stranger enters your home.
They are very intelligent animals. Because of their small size require very little in the way of exercise. This makes them an ideal pet for someone living in a small apartment where there is very limited space.
There are two varieties of Chihuahua, the smooth and long coat. Obviously the long-coat requires a little more attention, but the coat is soft, not curly and does not need very much grooming. The smooth coat variety requires little more than an occasional rub-down with cloth.
The ears are large, set wide on the head, and the eyes are unusually bright and sparkling.
The Chihuahua is a delightful little animal, affectionate and lovable, and will give people, especially those no longer as active as they once were, years of loyal companionship.
