This article is one of a great many articles written by Dennis Fisher about a very wide variety of subjects concerning different  dogs, such as obedience training, breeding, showing, health matters, training problems and other subjects.  All these articles appear on Dennis Fisher's websites.   Visit  http://www.allaboutgermanshepherddogs.com the site that has been set up specifically for German Shepherd Dog enthusiasts, or http://www.freedogadvice.com  if you interested in a breed   other than German Shepherd Dogs.

The choice of the most suitable breed for your own particular requirements will depend on a variety of different factors.  Very often the choice is an emotional one rather than governed by practical considerations.

Your family  might have owned a dog of a particular type when you were a child to which you were especially attached; or the beauty of a particular breed might appeal to you.

Perhaps you may have seen a film like “101 Dalmatians” that featured the Dalmatian, or  the “Beethoven” series that featured the Saint Bernard; or “The ugly Daschund” in which the Great Dane was the star  and  this breed appealed to you.

But in considering which breed would be most suitable for your purpose it is wise not to ignore the practical considerations.

In order to make it easier for you choose the breed most suitable for your requirements, you will find  details below of  SEVENTY popular breeds with  useful information about their temperaments.

Over the years I have personally owned a number of these seventy different breeds of dogs.  I have also had experience of many different breeds in my training classes.  Although the advice is given from a personal perspective, I trust you will find it helpful.
